Today, our world-class show continues with a Wiki-leaked DNC, Bernie, Hillary and Tim Kaine, and fiddling around while Rome burns or what you can do while depressed with the state of the world. On that note! Nerd vs. Nerd and Hillary’s Dictionary are today’s Game of Wit and Whimsy.

Quick Takes

  • Tim LaHaye – No longer having to worry about being left behind, popular Christian teacher and author Tim LaHaye passed away this week. Best known for his extremely popular Left Behind series, co-authored with Jerry Jenkins, LaHaye wrote many other books on Christian teaching, with a particular focus on Bible prophecy. He was 90 years old.
  • Father Jacques Hamel – At age 86, Catholic priest Jacques Hamel passed away yesterday in a small French village when two Muslim radicals stormed into his church and cut off his head. We feel his martyrdom is worthy of commendation. And, we might suggest, outrage.
  • Pokemon, uh, Stop? – The popularity of Nintendo’s Pokemon Go! App caused the company’s stock to nearly double. After they informed stockholders that the financial benefits of the app would be “limited,” they took an immediate 18% plunge, the largest for the company since 1990.
  • Turkey Update – The fallout from the failed coup attempt in Turkey continues, some of it worrisome. The government has apparently embraced the policy that even suggesting that Erdogan “staged” the coup should get you arrested. Because, hey, if you think that then you must have been involved! Over 60,000 police officers, judges, civil servants, and citizens have been arrested and detained since the coup. Amnesty International claims to have credible evidence that many of these detainees have been beaten, tortured, and even raped.

Segment One: DNC Gets WikiLeaked!

Wikileaks released over 20,000 emails they hacked from the Democratic National Committee, and it contained lots of, well, interesting information. Namely, that the DNC is corrupt and clearly favored Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders in the Presidential race, and even sought ways to help her defeat him. As a result, DNC chairwoman Debbie Wasserman-Schulz resigned, and will likely not speak at the convention this week. Bernie supporters are hopping mad and protesting, even as their guy takes the stage and endorses Hillary. Oh, and don’t worry about Debbie; she was immediately hired by Hillary. I mean, shady stuff with email? She’s got the necessary job experience!

But seriously, guys, what’s going to be the fallout, if any?

Julian Assange promises he’s going to leak more emails, some of which are “very damaging” to Hillary. What say you: bluster or reality?

[Game: Nerd vs. Nerd]

Nerd v Nerd

Segment Two: Bernie, Hillary, and Tim Kaine

Hillary announced her Vice-Presidential running mate, Virginia Senator (and former Governor) Tim Kaine. This appears to be a relatively “safe” pick. That is, politically safe. Many pundits think “safe” means… boring. And I suppose in an election that includes the likes of Donald Trump, Tim Kaine is kind of boring. Is he, really?

Who is this guy, and why did she pick him? Will he help the campaign, and how?

DNC Recap

Let’s talk about Bernie. After all the hype, all the rallies, all the opposition—and now, after knowing the DNC was collaborating with Hillary against him—he rolls over and endorses her. Why? And… will his rabid followers fall in line with him, or revolt? Is the Democrat Party as divided as the Republican Party?

[Game: Hillary’s Dictionary]

Hillarys Dictionary

  • Hillary Clinton Standard - There’s a standard from everyone else and then there’s this,  a higher standard.
  • Bernie Sanders supporters - the young people who just don’t do their own research.
  • Rein it in - Something she claims to want to do with Wallstreet now.
  • Goes “off the reservation” - She said Donald Trump does this and then retracted because she “meant no disrespect to Native Americans.” She wants this election to be about lifting people up, not tearing them down.”
  • “a lot of coal miners and coal companies”  - Somebody she’s going to put out of business.
  • Nancy Reagan - Somebody who did a lot to help with the AIDS epidemic when nobody would say anything about it.
  • Libya - Somewhere we didn’t lose a single person as a result of the intervention.

Segment Three: Let’s Fiddle While Rome Burns!

Hey, summertime shouldn’t be dominated by the news of the collapse of western civilization! Let’s engage in a little distraction. Some people distract themselves with sports, some with music, some with movies, and some with Pokemon Go! How are you guys spending your leisure time this summer?

Hollywood’s putting out some big movies. The new Star Trek is out. Jason Bourne is about to return to the silver screen. Ben Hur is getting a remake! Any thoughts about that?

This brings up an interesting topic: With so many urgent world events, should we engage in leisure pursuits? Doesn’t that seem irresponsible and trivial?

As always, we have a great show for you tonight! We’ll be discussing the latest in Trumpville and Republican National Convention, what we should of the failed coup on Turkey and the what the future might hold as a result of the continued onslaught of terrorism in Europe. As expected we’ll be breaking up deeper discussions for games of wit and whimsy. Tonight’s been Garry Marshall trivia and So You Think You Know the Princess Bride.

Quick Takes:

    • PokemonGo! - A game where you hunt and catch imaginary monsters has taken the world by storm. Pokemon Go is different that traditional games in that you play in reality, traveling to catch pokemon, visit pokestops, and train in virtual gyms that have real locations. There are an estimated 30 million users and more daily users than Twitter, making it the biggest mobile game in US history.
  • Ticker Tape Parade - Brian’s got a solo duet project.
  • Police Shootings – Since our last show, there’s been a slew of deadly violence between citizens and police. In Dallas, a sniper opened fire on police officers patrolling at a Black Lives Matter protest, killing 5 and wounding 9. Other incidents of police shootings in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Kansas City, Missouri have inflamed racial conflict in America.

Segment One: The Trump Parade!

The Republican National Convention has dominated news this week. With very few GOP leaders wanting to speak, the line up of speakers this year was… interesting. We’ve had all the Trump kids take a turn on the stage as well as Mrs. Trump. Everybody was applauding her efforts since she did remarkably well for her first major speaking appearance. Meanwhile a reporter in an airport in LA noticed segments were almost verbatim Michelle Obama’s from 2008. Fallout ensues. Is this legit plagiarism or just inspiration (as I’ve seen suggested from Trumpers)? Will we forget all of this in a week or two?

  • - There was some kerfuffle with the delegates’ audible vote for the nominee and the Colorado delegates left in protest. Anything to this?
  • - Last night gave us an even more explosive moment than the previous night with Ted Cruz’s speech without a Trump endorsement and was met with deafening boos and mixed reactions from the public at home. Cruz tiene grandes cajones? Is this good for Cruz or did he just sign his own GOP death certificate? Did you catch Newt Gingrich’s move to try and save Cruz’s non-endorsement? What do you guys think?
  • -Mike Pence. Game-changer, guys?

Finally, guys, we need to address the giant, big, elephant in the room. Given the option of Hillary or Donald, how in the world are we supposed to vote!?

[Game: Fill in the Blank, Garry Marshall Edition]

Fill in the Blank, Garry Marshall Edition

Writer/Director/actor Garry Marshall died. He’s known for Happy Days, The Odd Couple, Pretty Woman, The Princess Diaries, and a whole lot more. Does anyone have a favorite Garry Marshall film?

Segment Two: A Fake Coups in Turkey?

In international news, a military coups in Turkey appears to have failed, and President Erdogan has retained power. But not without sweeping recriminations. State of emergency, military officers dismissed, travel bans, teacher/ministerial licenses revoked. This is a part of the world Americans don’t pay much attention to. What should we make of all this? Who are the good guys: Erdogan or the military? Was this a theatrical/cynical ploy by Erdogan to consolidate power? Is a NATO member sliding toward becoming a new Iran?

[Sponsor Break: ADF-Prayer]

[Game: Princess Bride Trivia!]

Segment Three: Terror in Europe

The rest of Europe continues to be in turmoil after ISIS-inspired terror attacks left scores dead last week. In the coastal city of Nice (“Nees”), France, a terrorist plowed a truck into a promenade and killed more than 80 people: men, women, and children. Then, in Germany, an axe-wielding attacker wounded four people on a train before being shot by police. Tensions are mounting on the continent. With the slow-motion breakup of the European Union (precipitated by Brexit), continued lax immigration policies, what’s the future hold?

Quick Takes:

  • 4th of July Recap: This week was America’s 240th birthday! How did we celebrate?
  • The Ark Encounter Opens: Ken Ham and his fellow Young Earth Creationists have finished their $100 Million Noah’s Ark amusement attraction in Kentucky! Is this on your bucket lists?
  • Hey Girl! Go to Church and Live Longer! With an impressive sampling of almost 90,000 women, a new academic study finds a correlation between church attendance and lower suicide rates for women. Women who attend church once a week are over 5 times less likely to commit suicide. Um, did we need a study for this? Are we surprised?

Segment One: No Prosecution for Hillary!

There was nothing more scintillating than the FBI’s announcement that they will recommend no criminal charges for former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton over her mishandling of classified information. This occurred directly on the heels of Attorney General Loretta Lynch having a private sit-down meeting with Mrs. Clinton’s husband in a private plane on the tarmac of Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. Lots to talk about here.

  • Are we surprised?
  • What do we make of FBI Director James Comey’s public announcement? It was jarring: he painstakingly outlined how each and every public statement by Hillary explaining her, um, unusual email practices was an outright lie. He documented how she clearly violated Federal law. And then, he just says, “no charges.” Whaaa?
  • What are the political ramifications?
  • What are the cultural ramifications (e.g., public trust in our institutions)?

Not the Onion News

- South Carolina town bans saggy pants, $600 fine for repeat offenders http://www.foxla.com/news/share-this/170400582-story

- Alabama town reviews law against public dancing.

Segment Two: Police Shootings (Again)

Looks like another hot summer of urban protests. Police in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, were caught on camera shooting a black man at point blank range as they attempted to handcuff him for selling bootleg CDs. Then, in the Twin Cities of Minnesota, an officer shot and killed a driver in front of his girlfriend and child. The circumstances of that shooting are sketchy, but the girlfriend recapped the shooting on Facebook Live and claimed that her boyfriend told the officer he was carrying a gun, and had a license to do so. When he reached for his wallet to retrieve his driver’s license, the officer shot him six times.

  • Do we have a police brutality/unaccountability problem?
  • Is this, as Black Lives Matter would have us believe, a flagrant disregard for… black lives?
  • Does our culture have a fear problem?

Segment Three: Iowa Censors Pastors?

In one of our sponsor segments, you’ll notice Alliance Defending Freedom’s Jeremy Tedesco explaining “pre-enforcement” lawsuits and how they might benefit you or your organization. Well, this week they filed just such a lawsuit in Iowa that made major headlines. The Iowa Human Rights Commission put out a pamphlet explaining how all “public access” gatherings will be governed, essentially, by speech codes that prohibit any language that might upset people of LGBT persuasion. This is becoming standard fare, of course, but what raised eyebrows is that the pamphlet explicitly addressed the question of whether this applied to… churches. The answer? Yes. If your church service is “open to the public” (e.g., all church services), what your pastor says from the pulpit is subject to the code. That means, especially when he’s preaching on what the Bible says about sex and marriage. The ADF filed a case in Federal court challenging this rather stunning disregard for the very first Amendment in the bill of rights.

  • No more swimsuit competition!?

Say ain’t so! First, Playboy nixes nudes, now the Miss Teen USA pageant will no longer have a swimsuit competition! Instead, they will model “athletic wear.” It’s almost like we’re getting back to a standard of morality.

  • ISIS Bombs Istanbul

The Ataturk Airport in Istanbul, Turkey, was bombed this week, and most rational people conclude that ISIS was behind it. Can we do more than just “report” on these kinds of attacks week after week? What is there to say, guys?

  • Russia Cracks Down on Religious Liberty

And now for an ominous sign: Russia is contemplating their most sweeping regulation of religious institutions since the demise of the Soviet Empire. Essentially, the law would ban evangelism outside the doors of the church. This would have massive effect on all sorts of missionary efforts. Looks like religious liberty isn’t just under attack on this side of the world!

Segment One: Brexit!

The seismic news of the week is the stunning referendum held in the United Kingdom about whether or not to remain in the European Union. To everyone’s shock, by a 52-48 margin the people voted to leave—or “exit”—the EU. The result produced howls of outrage, painting it out to be a disastrous decision made by a few duped, xenophobic old people that will ruin the UK economy for the next generation. This was a victory for hatred and bigotry over the forces of love and tolerance.

Guys, what does Brexit mean? Are the horror stories of a massive economic downturn as a result likely?

Segment Two: SCOTUSFocus

The US Supreme Court wrapped up their term, handing down some notable decisions. The most notable is perhaps Whole Women’s Health v. Hellerstedt, a challenge to a Texas law that placed restrictions on abortion clinics—namely, it held abortion clinics to the same code standards as any other outpatient medical clinic. In a 5-3 decision, the Court concluded that requiring abortion clinics to have the same standards as other medical facilities somehow violated the Constitutional rights of women seeking abortion.

Comments?

In other Supreme Court news, the Court refused to hear the appeal of the Storman family, who own a pharmacy in the state of Washington. Ralph’s Thriftway does not sell abortifacient pills because of their religious belief that human life begins at conception and is due protection under the law. When customer’s asked staffers at Ralph’s for these drugs, they were referred to one of the other THIRTY pharmacies in a five-mile radius.

That didn’t matter for the State of Washington, who, along with abortion-industry lobbyists, changed the pharmacy rules to prohibit conscientious objection to selling abortifacients. The high court refused to hear the Storman’s appeal, which means they either violate their consciences or get out of the pharmacy business.

Justice Alito read a scathing dissent from the bench, which said, in part: “If this is a sign of how religious liberty claims will be treated in the years ahead, those who value religious freedom have cause for great concern.”

Are we concerned?

Jesus Juke

The phrase - “I’m really enjoying Vacation Bile School this year. It feels like really great outreach for the community.”

Segment Three: The Benghazi Report

The House Committee investigating the events of September 11, 2012 in Benghazi, Libya released their final report. And it isn’t pretty. Providing metric tons of documentation and testimony from the law enforcement and intelligence communities, it clearly lays out the timeline of the terrorist attack on the American consulate that resulted in the deaths of four Americans. And it establishes that the Obama Administration knew, from the initial moments, that this was indeed a coordinated terrorist attack on an American outpost. Yet they insisted for weeks that this was a “spontaneous uprising” caused by some obscure video on YouTube.

Guys, this really just confirms something we already knew. The question is: will this report matter? Isn’t Hillary Clinton’s role in Benghazi already sort of “baked in” to the electoral calculus?

Show Notes

Today’s show is no exception to cultural hotspots. Because we love you, we’ll be talking about fun things, like gays, death, murder, and politics.  We’re kicking off our discussion today with not one, but two segments on Orlando and closing out the end of the show with Donald Trump’s campaign efforts to mimic a North Korean missile. As always, we’ll have our usual games of wit and whimsy following our two sponsor breaks.

Quick Takes:

  • Eric Teetsel - Our friend Eric Teetsel made the news yesterday. As a former Marco Rubio adviser, he attended Donald Trump’s meeting with evangelical leaders and stood out front with a handmade sign denouncing Trump for a variety of very non-pro-life positions.
  • Birth Control—The App! A number of websites and apps are now available allowing you to get birth control pills without ever visiting the doctor. What do we think of that?
  • Sex Makes Babies - Speaking of birth control, a new study recently released shows that school districts that distributed condoms saw a statistically significant uptick in teen pregnancies in the 1990s. By significant, we mean between 10 and 12% higher rates than other school districts. And people everywhere are shocked because…?

Segment One: Orlando, Part One: Sorting out the perpetrators, motives, and victims

Since we were off the airwaves last week, Dead Reckoning didn’t have an “instant take” on the events that unfolded in Orlando, Florida. A gunman entered a predominantly gay nightclub, Pulse, and killed 49 people and injured dozens more. His motive? Well, he said it was an act of jihad in solidarity with ISIS. The Obama Administration says no one can really be sure. That said, we’re sort of glad we didn’t have to give a quick take on it because the issues involved have taken on lives of their own and are complicated. So we’re going to tackle this in two segments.

So, first: who is really to blame? One of the more disturbing memes to emerge has been this: if you oppose homosexual behavior, or oppose same-sex marriage, or baking cakes for same-sex weddings, you created the culture of “hate” that led to these murders. Let’s talk about that.

Nerd v Nerd

For Nerd v. Nerd, it’s a special NBA Basketball edition in honor of the Cleveland Cavaliers (Cavs) beating the Warriors on Sunday’s Game 7 of the NBA Finals. It was the most watched Finals game since 1998 when Michael Jordan was playing for the Chicago Bulls against the Utah Jazz.

Segment Two: Orlando, Part Two—Guns!

Predictably—and I do mean predictably; predictable as the sun rising—the Orlando terror attack immediately inflamed the long-running debate over gun control. “Ban the AR-15; no one needs an assault rifle!” they yelled. “Come and take it from my cold, dead hands,” yelled the other side. We haven’t talked about guns or gun control on Dead Reckoning in a long time, so perhaps it’s time!

  • ADF Pre-Enforcement Challenge

[Fill in the Blank]

Fill in the Blank: Founding Fathers

Last week, the Broadway musical, Hamilton took home the Tony Awards. In honor of that, we doing a Founding Father’s edition of Fill in the Blank.

Segment Three: The Incredible Sinking Campaign of Donald J. Trump

Finally, the moment you’ve all been waiting for. Dead Reckoning has managed to go a record number of episodes without talking about the presumptive Republican nominee for President. But, alas, the moratorium isn’t fair to our listeners and talking about clowns is almost always entertaining and sometimes frightening. So what’s going on in Trumpland?

  • He fired his campaign managing strong-man, Corey Lewandowski.
  • His poll numbers like a North Korean missile, are crashing and burning.
  • He released a fundraising report that was…shocking. And abysmal. Ted Cruz has six times the cash-on-hand.

That means donors are nervous. And so are the delegates pledged to vote for him at the convention. Are we going to see an unpredecented “You’re Fired!” in Cleveland?

That’s it for this week!

Quick Takes:

  • John Oliver Kills Brain Cells—Again

Way back when we did DRTV, on occasion we had to respond to comedian/late night talk show host John Oliver. He is known for doing absurd and flamboyant things to highlight some terrible injustice in American society—like the time he set up a phony “church” to demonstrate how absolutely horrible it is that there are such things as “tax-exempt” organizations.

This week he took on the terrible injustice of “debt collection” agencies, and claimed to have given away $15 Million. Well, no, he didn’t. Not even close.

  • The Emoji Bible!

William Tyndale, call your office! There is now an “Emoji Bible,” which is, um, a “translation” of the Bible into emoji characters. What do we think of the incredible evangelistic potential of this exciting news!?

” arise shine 4 ur 💡 has come & the 🙌 of 😇 has risen upon u. ~ Isaiah 60:1″

  • First Woman Nominee!

Hillary Clinton became the first nominee for President of the Unites States while being under FBI investigation—er, sorry. No, the first nominee who happens to be female. Are we rejoicing? Celebrating? Mourning?

Segment One: There’s a “Rape Culture” After All?

Stanford University student Brock Turner was convicted of multiple counts of sexual assault, and faced a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison. A firestorm of controversy erupted when the presiding judge handed down a sentence of six months in prison, plus probation.

Fueling the controversy: 1. Brock Turner is a star athlete at Stanford (swimmer). 2. His father appealed for a lenient sentence by saying the maximum sentence was a “steep price to pay for 20 minutes of action in his 20 years of life.” 3. Buzzfeed published the entire 8,000 word statement his rape victim gave in court. It was a…sensational and emotional account.

Essentially, the Brock Turner rape case broke the Internet. What do we make of it?

Game: Cooking Trivia

Food Trivia

Both of this week’s games (were suggest by Molly and) are inspired by the 75th anniversary of C.S. Lewis preaching the “Weight of Glory” sermon, which was this week. The title of the sermon, “The Weight of Glory,” comes from 2 Corinthians 4:17: “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.”

It’s possibly the most quoted sermon in history and is considered one of the most widely-read and most influential sermons in the English language! In it, one of the observations Lewis makes is that the beautiful and pure things of this world are to be enjoyed. Good food, friends, music, talk, drink… they can all be a way to reflect on the best beautiful thing there is: God himself.

With that said, our games are focused on food. One of the ways we enjoy God’s creation is creating through food!

Segment Two: True Self or New Self?

Christian Rock Star Trey Pearson, 35-year-old lead singer for the band Everyday Sunday, put his career on the line by announcing he is gay. In an emotional statement, he said he could no longer “keep trying to be something [he] wasn’t.” On cue, the accolades have begun pouring in for his “courage” and “bravery.” Buried in the bottom of the stories, however, is something that gets overlooked in the rush to make Trey Pearson a hero: he is leaving his wife and two young children.

  •  Rather than acknowledge that his sexual behavior is contrary to the Bible, he claims that there is “absolutely no conflict” between “accepting who I am and following Jesus.” What should we think of this account of “identity”? This sort of thing is becoming more and more common: how should Christians respond?

Segment Three: Academic Study Shows… um, Nevermind!

A few years ago the American Journal of Political Science published a blockbuster “new study” that showed that political conservatives are more likely than liberals to evidence “psychoticism” and “authoritarianism.” On the other hand, liberals are all into “social desirability”—you know, loving other people, singing Kumbaya, and otherwise getting along.

BUT…this week the greatest mea culpa in the history of academic publishing took place. The Journal issued a correction to their original story, and the correction essentially goes like this: “Um, you know that paper we published? Nevermind! Oops. We actually attributed the test results to the wrong people. Actually, all those ‘psychotic’ and ‘authoritarian’ results were actually for… the liberals.”

Guys, we’ve talked about this before and it happens to be one of your favorite topics, Hadley. Weren’t you telling us awhile back about a great book on this topic? (Jonathan Haidt?)

Quick Takes:

* John Oliver Kills Brain Cells—Again

Way back when we did DRTV, on occasion we had to respond to comedian/late night talk show host John Oliver. He is known for doing absurd and flamboyant things to highlight some terrible injustice in American society—like the time he set up a phony “church” to demonstrate how absolutely horrible it is that there are such things as “tax-exempt” organizations.
This week he took on the terrible injustice of “debt collection” agencies, and claimed to have given away $15 Million. Well, no, he didn’t. Not even close.

Gorillas, Stupid Mandates, and Some Uncool Cultures!

In this episode of DR Radio, the DR Radio team talk about gorilla hysteria, government mandates, and a friendly reminder that not all cultures are equally cool! They also play a round of the classics, Not the Onion News and Nerd v. Nerd. We’ve included the show notes below if you want to follow along or check our sources.

SHOW NOTES:

Quick Takes:

Katie Ducks For Cover – As we reported last week, Yahoo’s Katie Couric is in hot water for egregiously doctoring an interview for her new movie about gun control. She responded by posting the original transcript in the interests of transparency. Does this get her off the hook?

The Hair, Oh, the Hair! – Jan Crouch, co-founder of Trinity Broadcasting Network, has passed away. She and her husband built a cable television empire. Largely known as purveyors of the “health and wealth” gospel, she was known for her outlandish fashion sense and hair that put Donald Trump’s to shame. RIP.

Another Significant RIP – Last week another death occurred that didn’t garner international attention. Because Brian is nerdy and ivory tower, he thinks it is highly significant. So, Brian, tell about the late theologian John Webster, and why his life and death is significant.

Segment One: Do Government Mandates Help Financially Help You?

The “Affordable” Care Act strikes again! Last week a new rule about overtime pay was handed down, and while it seems like a “win-win” for workers, it isn’t. Thankfully, here at Dead Reckoning we have a certified expert to tell you all about it. Hadley, tell us how this latest news once again demonstrates that the “Affordable” Care Act is really the “Unaffordable Care Act.”

[Broader Q’s: Are government mandates ever helpful to economic markets? Why or why not?]

 [Nerd v. Nerd]

Segment Two: Gorilla Hysteria!

Authorities at the Cincinnati Zoo had to make a quick decision to save the life of a young boy who fell (or climbed, depending on who you believe) into the gorilla exhibit. 17-year old Gorilla Harambe somewhat violently dragged the boy around the enclosure, and the zoo security team shot the animal dead.

Cue. The. Outrage.

The mob quickly gathered online, accusing zookeepers of being “murderers” and demanding that the parents be “held accountable” for the death of sweet Harambe. The outrage rivals the trophy killing of the Zimbabwean lion by a Minnesota dentist a few years ago. Brian, Hadley, what do we make of this phenomenon?

Segment Three: No, Not All Cultures are Equally Cool

An influential public policy advisory group in Pakistan recently released their recommendations for how men should handle the situation of having a wife who refuses sex or chooses her own fashion style. The Council of Islamic Ideology, a group often sought out by the Pakistani government, now advises that husbands “lightly beat” their wives to force compliance. The council went to detailed lengths to provide guidelines for how to do this: “Hit her in areas where the skin is not too thick or too thin. Do not use a shoe or a broom on the head, or hit her on the nose or the eyes.” And, “Do not break any bones or cut her skin or leave any marks. Do not hit her vindictively, but only for reminding her of her religious duties.”

A group of regular Prince Charmings. Brian, Hadley: thoughts!?

[If time]: In another reminder that, no, not all cultures are equally cool, we bring you this public service announcement: North Korea still exists. More specifically, American missionary Kenneth Bae is set to release a new book on his experience of being held captive for 735 days in the communist regime. He was watched continuously by 30 guards at the labor camp, and he details how they especially wanted to know all about… America. Is it true that everyone owns a car?

It is so quickly forgotten by the cultural relativists that the world’s flow of refugees and people seeking asylum flows pretty much in one direction.

Guys, thoughts?

Quick Takes:

  • Hailstorms Galore! - Jay and Brian regale the audience with hail stories.
  • #GiveCapABoyfriend - Now people want to make Steve Rogers gay. Give it a rest, people. There a bigger issues. Like Marvel publishing, just yesterday, a new Captain America comic that make Steve Rogers a lifelong Hydra agent. What!!!?
  • Netflix Just Made the Actual “Chilling” More Difficult - Coming soon, exclusive rights to Disney, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and Pixar! Who’s psyched?
  • Methodical Methodists – The United Methodist Church finally reversed its pro-abortion stance this week. After 40 years. In other news, the denomination failed to discern what the Bible teaches about same-sex unions. Maybe they’ll chime in when 2056 rolls around.

Segment One: The Island of Dr. Moreau!

Utopia, the mythical island that represents heaven on earth, is not a real place. There is a place that represents hell on earth, however, and it is a real place. No, I’m not referring to North Korea (although that should be in the conversation); rather, I speak of the Island of Dr. Moreau, the mad scientist who breeds animals and humans!

Scientists in California are seeking to create the first chimera (pron., “kye-mare-uh”), a human-animal hybrid. If you’ve seen Dr. Moreau, you probably understand that this doesn’t usually end well for humans. Sadly, this isn’t fiction and is drawing a lot of questions from bioethicists and other researchers. One of the researchers says, “I don’t consider that we’re playing God or even close to that…We’re just trying to use the technologies that we have developed to improve peoples’ life.”

Okay, guys: As Christians, is it important to fight for the distinction between man and animal? Where is the line? Are there ethical boundaries? What are they? Fire away!

[Game: #JesusJuke]

Jesus Juke

“I’ve been so tired lately between working full time and trying to be a good parent. It feels good just to relax with some friends and a good beer.”

Segment Two: Failure to Launch!

A new Pew Research Study is out and, for the first time since at least the 1880’s, it’s now more popular for young adults to live with their parents than any other living arrangement. Cue the “millennials-are-the-crappiest-generation-ever” essays. But we already know that. What’s interesting is that this trend has consistently increased every year that they’ve checked. The growth of this statistic isn’t what’s unique. What’s unique is the contrast between living with the parents to living with a spouse or partner.

What’s going on? Stunted adulthood and prolonged adolescence? Bad economy and massive student loan debt? Delay of marriage and fear of commitment due to divorce culture? All of the above?

What does the future portend when 1) no one is marrying 2) no one is having babies and now 3) no one is moving out of their parents’ house?

[Game: Botecelli - Disney Themed]

Disney Bottecelli

Segment Three: Katie Couric, Dragon-Slayer!

Celebrated journalist Katie Couric has a new documentary coming out on gun control. She gathers a group of gun enthusiasts and asks them penetrating, devastation, render-you-speechless questions. As in, there is a literal scene in which she asks the group a question about how to stop terrorists from buying guns if there are no background checks. The camera pans around for ten seconds and there is complete silence. The gun rights advocates look puzzled and pensive, glancing down. And then the show moves on. Katie Couric, Dragon-Slayer!

Except… the gun-rights boobs aren’t as stupid as you might be led to believe. They happened to have recorded the event in its entirety, and released the audio of what actually happened. To put it mildly, what occurred is nothing whatsoever like what the movie portrays. Immediately after asking the question, she gets no less than four straight minutes of thoughtful answers. Naturally, she replaced it in the movie with… silence, and unrelated footage from elsewhere when the group wasn’t saying anything.

Will it matter? Does anybody care about journalistic ethics? It seems like some organizations do pay token attention to it (e.g., firing of Brian Williams), but can they ignore something this flagrant? Will they?

Quick Takes

  • Hadley Cable Hit Report
  • Brian’s Budapest Report
  • Jay’s Life Report
  • Make Elsa a Lesbian!

Somebody started a hashtag campaign to get Disney to give Elsa a girlfriend in the Frozen sequel. Surprisingly, LGBTQ lined up in favor of the idea; Franklin Graham and various family organizations didn’t! I know, shocker, right? Thoughts?

  • Global Abortion Rate is Down

The Guttmacher Institute released a report that the abortion rate in the developing world has declined significantly over the past 25 years. In 1990 the rate was 47 abortions per 1,000 women, and that number has declined to 27 per 1,000. While that’s an encouraging sign, the report is mixed. Due to population increase, the total number of actual abortions (not the rate) has increased. 1 in 4 pregnancies globally ends in abortion. 75% of abortions are obtained by married or cohabitating women. Those numbers aren’t so encouraging.

Segment One: Little Sisters Prevail!

In a unanimous 8-0 decision, the Supreme Court vacated the ruling against the Little Sisters of the Poor and other parties, instructing the lower courts to fashion a solution to the legal conflict in a way that respects their religious convictions. Before we talk about that, let’s have our resident expert on all things Obamacare give us a little refresher on what this case was about! Hadley?

  • [What do we think about Supreme Court nominations and the Presidential election?]

[Nerd v. Nerd] “No chill zone” - When someone cannot be calmed down; that moment when all sh*t is lost. One can be put in a “No Chill Zone” by another as a threat.

Segment Two: Obama Orders Schools to Gender-Bend!

They say second terms for Presidents rarely go well, and Barack Obama seems intent on proving it. Last week his Departments of Justice and Education issued a joint letter informing every school district in the country that “sex” under Title IX does not mean what’s on a birth certificate, but each student’s individual “gender identity.” This means that if your kid’s school doesn’t allow boys into the girl’s locker room, the school could lose its Federal funding. What do we think about this latest battle over sexuality?

Segment Two: China Cracks Down on NGOs
China just announced that they’re tightening restrictions on foreign NGO’s. This will undoubtably affect the missions orgs at work there and others trying to make a difference on the human rights front. This is especially depressing on the heels of news late last year that they were removing the public displays of crosses and then the news this week that they had buried a pastors wife alive in a dispute over land rights that the church eventually won.

This seems a bit removed from us here in the states, but is it?

Segment Three: Do Women Have a Right to Privacy After All?
Another chapter in the ongoing “bathroom” battles. The U.S. Department of Justice has warned North Carolina that their recent law ensuring that the sexes use their designated restrooms violates (they say) violates Title 9—the statute prohibiting “sex discrimination.”

ADF has just turned the tables, however, suing, on the behalf of 51 plaintiffs, a Chicago school district as well as the Departments of Education and Justice for mandating a policy that biological boys be allowed to use girls’ locker room and bathroom facilities. They maintain that the school has a duty to protect the privacy and dignity of female students.

We’ve been told for a generation now (ever since Roe v. Wade) that a woman’s “right to privacy” is enshrined in the Constitution, right? How does the left square that circle?

The post DR Radio: Insane Orange Overlords, China Crackdown & Women’s Right to Privacy appeared first on Dead Reckoning.

In this episode, the DR Radio team discusses the presumptive GOP nominee, China's crackdown on missions and NGO's, and whether women have a right to privacy Show Notes
Quick Takes:

• From Jacob Seay on Facebook, in honor or what some are calling Star Wars day (Isn’t every day Star Wars day?) what’s your favorite ship in the SW universe?

• Hip-hop artist Lecrae stood in with The Roots on Jimmy Fallon Tuesday night. Anyone a fan?

• Mother’s day is Sunday!
Segment One: The Insane Orange Overlord Outlasts Them All

Donald Trump wins the Republican Nomination for President!
• Is this the end of the GOP?

• Can he win in November? What are his prospects?

• How should Christians vote?
[Not the Onion News]

Target, Suicide Nation and the Carly Crush

Dead Reckoning Radio is where host Jay Friesen, the grieving , Hadley Heath and Dr. Brian G. Mattson intelligently engage with culture’s critical moments from a distinctly Christian perspective.

Those items up for discussion today include Target! Boycott or…not? America now has the highest suicide rate in 30 years and the Cruz/Fiorina ticket and how this is likely to play vs. Trump. As usual, we will have games of wit including Nerd vs. Nerd and a round of Jesus Juking. But first, some quick takes and updates!

Show Notes

Quick Takes:

  • Personal Updates!
    • Jay: CLA Conference
    • Hadley? Any interest Fox Biz hits?
    • Brian: Why are you headed to Budapest?
  • Confectioners as Public Enemy

The curious case of Jack Phillips has ended, which confirmed the Colorado cake confectioner as a public menace! His crime? Acting according to his conscience by not baking a wedding cake for a same-sex union. A Colorado court denied his appeal, ordering him to supply wedding cakes for same-sex unions, “reeducate” his staff about non-discrimination, and to file quarterly compliance reports. Regardless of what you think of his position, this seems like a major governmental intrusion into a business owner’s conscience rights, doesn’t it? [Brian/Hadley, comment away]

Following the Obergefell decision there were many voices urging compromise—some kind of concession for those holding a view of marriage that has been universal for thousands of years, until about yesterday. Looks like no such luck. What you make of this? [Brian/Hadley, comment away]

  • Prince!

Another pop music icon passed away recently: Prince! Or is it “The Artist Formerly Known As Prince?” I can’t keep track. The public reaction was pretty surprising. When was the last time Prince was musically relevant? Everyone seemed devastated and professed undying love for him and his music. Hadley and Brian: can you fake it like everybody else? Tell us what you loved about Prince and his music!

Segment One: Target Lives Up To Its Name

In the wake of protests surrounding North Carolina’s so-called “bathroom bill,” consumer-goods giant Target publicized its policy concerning its public restrooms and dressing rooms. In essence, there is no distinction between ladies and gentlemen. Anyone is free to use whatever facility they wish, depending on how they “identify” their gender.

Some Christians are calling for a boycott of Target. Others argue that is a fruitless enterprise. What do you guys think?

What are the longer-term trends for this sort of thing?

 [Nerd v. Nerd]: flexitarian

Segment Two: Suicide Nation

In very sad news, the United States has recently hit a 30-year high in its suicide rate, and the jump is most noticeable in the middle-aged. This seems a strange statistic in the age of “Hope” and “Change.” What do you guys make of it?

Is it related to a poor economy/poor upward mobility/ crushing short-term debts loads, etc?

[Game of Wit: Jesus Juke]

Jesus Juke

What is a Jesus Juke?  Jesus juke is a phrase coined by the Stuff Christians Like guy, Jon Acuff back in 2010. Jesus jukes are moves that you make in conversation to showcase your superior Jesus-ness. Acuff defined it thusly: Like a football player juking you at the last second and going a different direction, the Jesus Juke is when someone takes what is clearly a joke filled conversation and completely reverses direction into something serious and holy. The sanctified Debbie Downer.

The terrible thing is that a Jesus juke usually stands in the way of actual compassion or correction and is usually just pharisaical preening SO we’re playing a game where Brian and Hadley get to come up with sick comebacks to a Jesus juke.

An excellent recent example of this comes from a conversation during last week’s CLA conference where Jay was boasting about his coffee snobbishness…

Comment: My brother just got an awesome new sportster with rad spoilers! Bet that car gets some speed!

Segment Three: Cruz/Fiorina

In a rather desperate effort to change the narrative of Donald Trump’s “inevitability,” Senator Ted Cruz announced as his running mate a favorite around these parts: Carly Fiorina. Will this change the narrative? What hopes are there for stopping Trump getting the majority of delegates before the convention? Are we coming to terms with a Trump nomination?
